The Metabox P960ED is the first laptop I’ve had with a 16.1” screen. In this review we’ll find out what this Clevo machine with RTX 2060 graphics is capable of. I’ll be looking at gaming performance, thermals, overclocking, battery life, and everything else to help you see if it’s worth it.

This video has been reuploaded with some important fixes. I’ve redone the thermal testing, including temperatures and clock speeds, as well as some game benchmarks, along with the conclusion at the end as a result.
In the original video, I noted a 26 watt CPU TDP limitation under combined CPU and GPU load, however after further testing this appears to be incorrect. After a reset of Windows (a fresh install), the limit instead appeared to be higher at 39 watts, invalidating some of my data, which is why I have taken an extra day to retest and change the video. Most games actually saw the same performance, which was expected as they’re not all CPU heavy, so only results were updated were there were notable differences (eg Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Shadow of the Tomb Raider).
How did this happen? Why the difference in results? I believe this was because when I first got the laptop, I downloaded the control panel software for the Clevo P960ED from another source, and after receiving the correct software/driver packages to use, the original configuration must have remained in place which introduced these lower limits. This explains why after a Windows reset the performance was better than what I reported in the original video.
To summarise, the laptop performs better than I stated in the initial review, I have retested and fixed the video. Sorry for the confusion! This mistake will most likely mean the video will not perform as well due to the YouTube algorithm, however I feel it is more important that the information provided be as accurate as possible, the old video has been deleted which unfortunately also means all previous comments too.
Just purchased this tonight.
Your review helped.
Went with the the 2060, upgraded to 16gb ram and 1tb infinity ssd
How do you get the back off of this laptop!?! I can not remove it for the life of me and it feels like I’ll break it.
Excellent video, I'm pretty confident I'll buy the Prime S laptop but upgrade the SSD to the Crucial P1 1TB M.2 PCIe SSD ($129aud more) or Samsung 860 EVO 1TB SATA 3 M.2 SSD ($199aud more)
I don't know that much about SSD's to know the differences however.
Clevo P960RD will be like msi ge65 rtx 2060 .
Clevo P960RD is good to buy ??
Thanks for the review, much appreciated
Also noticed this machine is using the Samsung 970 ssd drive not the one in the description. I enjoyed the review as thinking of buying thanks.
Hi Jarrod are you able to tell me what camera settings you use to take exposure bleed tests? Hard for me to know what is considered "normal". I can see bleed on mine very clearly in a room with low ambient daylight (curtains closed during the day).
To everyone that owns this laptop for a while how has it held up and is the build quality good
Thinking of upgrading from my 1060maxq to this.
Recieved my Prime-S P960RD today, and trying to open it. Almost certain its the same chassis as the one in the video. I removed the 11 screws on the back but cannot find how to lift up the keyboard. Are the 5 screws on under the keyboard necessary for removing the back panel?
Don't think I've seen reviews as food as your mate
Hi Jarrod, just wanted your opinion about a potential P960RC config I'm looking into as its chassis is basically identical to the P960ED.
The main differences are that it has a 1660 Ti, i7-9750H and 16GB of dual channel RAM. I know it's difficult to be certain without testing but do you think that the thermals of this would be similar or better/worse than the P960ED you've reviewed?
Hi Jarrod, Would you be able to do a review on Metabox Prive-V. I need thunderbolt port and that and Prime-x are the only ones that have thunderbolt.
Hello, thank you for the review. Could you help me by answering me some questions.?
Currently I own a Thinkpad T460s and an Asus G750JZ tank 🙂 I am looking for something in the middle. A portable under 3 kilos solution, that is not super loud.
Spec wise someting with RTX2060 or 1660Ti is enough.
Currently my options are:
– Clevo P960ED – the most expensive but also the one with the bigger screen and premium looks.
– Clevo NH50ED – i7 9750H and RTX2060 – I don't know how it compares with the NH58 that you reviewed.
– Clevo PB51
So far in my country the new Hellios 300 with 1660ti graphics is not available.
Which laptop would you recommend?
PS: I also noticed that in your tests under stress and max fans P960ED, P970EF, and P970EN are at around 56dB, which is kinda wired since they have different GPU-s.
Hi Jarrod thank you for all your reviews! They truly are great! In your opinion what is the better machine The Metabox Prime S or the Apex 15? I do a lot of heavy 3D work and renderings together with lots Adobe suites, I'm looking at purchasing one of the two…. Help! Thank you!
GJ Jarrod thats what i,m afraid of with those screens backlight bleeding 🙂 144hz
great review mate
certainly is strange to see a 16.1" screen
Hows the cooling on metabox does it get over 80
Great review but please try and inflect your voice upwards every so often!
So I finally bit the bullet and purchased a Sager NP7853 (Clevo NH58EDQ) which has almost identical specs to this unit but a slightly thicker chassis. After watching this video, I'm pretty confident that the thermals won't be an issue (especially since I ordered it with Kryonaut) but I'm curious to know if you'd ever consider reviewing that particular model.
Hey Jarrod!
Thanks for the video mate, i got a tank laptop atm ( ASUS ROG G750JW ), will i see any different from my 17"…..like most ppl in here am not so sure about the new design of gaming laptop, am used to the tank look…will they make more Tank like and not so expensive like some of the other RTX model are….?
Is this rebranded as the pro-star p960ed?
Ordered the 15 inch version with 8gb ram instead. Is this laptop still running well?
just ordered one! cheers
Im inbetween the p960ed and the legion y740. Dont really know what to buy since they perform identical. Its all up to the cooling since i will be overclocking the rtx 2060 and undervolting the processor. Which of the 2 has better thermals for oc and uv, also which will perform better?
Hey Jarrod, I was wondering what app and the specific values that you used to overclock the 2060 and undervolt the CPU in this laptop; I'm not entirely sure where to start. Thanks for the video by the way, I got my P960ED a few days ago and I'm very happy with the product!
Is 2 cores 2 threads the same as a quad core?
Hi! Are the gpu and cpu soldered to the mobo?
What is the response time of this computer?
Hi Jarrod, any chance you could include X Plane 11 in FPS in all your laptop testings?
The reason why I ask is that I seldom ever see any other Reviewers include such game/Sim.
Appreciate your efforts and detailed findings. Thanks mate!
This must be the Sager np7873
Sir is it worth a buy I'm from India and I'm going to Australia to study in July so should I buy from America or shall I buy after I land in Australia?
How reliable is this laptop? I’m from Singapore and aftershock sells this as the slate 15. However, friends I know who own aftershock laptops, which are also made by clevo, always complain about their laptops constantly failing and needing service which is quite a turnoff. But at the same time I can’t find another thin and light laptop with an rtx 2060 at this price point. Any advice please?
is there a way to reduce power limit throttling, also is it a lot of throttling, also would you recommend any other 2060 laptops with the same specs for a low price if not this one. i’m very worried about the power limit throttling so idk if i want to buy
This is so far the coolest laptop with RTX 2060 that I have watch
Was wondering if you could tell us if you were able to play games with no issues with fans at quieter settings and if so how loud thank you
