What is the max refresh rate we can get on "Mini-Display Port" by connecting an external monitor to the gaming laptop? Will it support 144Hz on 1440P/1080P resolution?
That's exactly what i'm trying to do and the good news is that the new MSI GS66 supports charging via Thunderbolt so that's a cable less ! I'm craving to know if the Thunderbolt port can run an external display using de dedicated GPU I did'nt find this info yet but this could be the ultimate setup ! If you could do a follow up to this video with the new GS66 it would be so great dude ! Thanks a lot 🙂
I did purchased an Alienware M15 r2 rtx 2070 to have one pc to carry over and I'm planning to have something similar. I have mouse + mousepad, lgitech z337 speakers, webcam and mic all connected to laptop. Sometimes I use a monitor and share with my working laptop via a switcher. I prefer portability over power
I have something very similar to this, except I use a usb hub and plug in the monitor through thunderbolt. Idk if buying the hub would be worth knocking it down to 2 cables.
Awesome video. Thank you. I am thinking to do this. Thinking of buy the monitor. I have a asus zephurus s with rtx 2070 max-p. So what monitor would you recommend? For gaming and also with nice color accuracy? Like nice combination? Please let me know.
Why not just use wifi & wireless mouse and keyboard? That way only 2 cables will be required to be connected
Going to college for programming. This actually gives me reason to buy a predator laptop now. Been trying to figure out if it was possible. Now I know. Awesome video!
Use a dock so u don't have to plug everything in the laptop
Does the cheaper plugable thunderbolts docking stations work with Asus Rog gaming laptops?
Is USB-C docking station enough for gaming? Usb-c version are alot cheaper than thunderbolt 3 ones.
I've recently traded in my Desktop to swap to a setup like this as I work away alot. It works amazingly well if you have the right setup! For those worried about lack of graphical power from laptops, take a look at the Razer Core X series or the HP OMEN Accelerator to use instead of the dock used here.
i would totally do this if gaming laptops came down in price. but i already do this with a chromebook that i use for school
whoa hold up .
you keep the laptop open ???
is this a thing ? I always close mine. starts taking off after a few minutes of chrome usage.
Nice vid ..got influenced and built kinda similar type of a setup with a Asus Tuf.. hey can u provide the link of that sea wallpaper
I want to do this but with a KVM so I can use my Laptop and my Desktop.
One PC (lap top) demands a strong backup solution, and a savings war-chest to just replace it in case of a failure, but also reduces the need to sync data like a squirrel stealing nuts from other squirrels.
I fly a ton for work I have a similar set up at home. Its so nice just to have one computer. So when I get home from traveling I dont have to transfer files or use a cloud or send emails to myself or what not. Just one computer with everything right there. I just really want an eGPU but alot of them are not docking stations also. This is an expensive route do not recommend for low budgets
I would put this setup in my house, mainly because I am getting a free monitor
mememe I am that niche. I want such a setup so that i can game and work at the desk but when i want to i can go to the couch and game and browse the net on the laptop there too while watching the telly. Although expensive i think my dream setup would be all Razer (I'm picky like that) Razer 17 laptop with 2 of their new monitors and fullsize keyboard, mouse and headphones. and to work as the dock and stop my laptop from getting outdated to quick I'd use the Razer core GPU box.
I love the concept of this battlestation, also check out Linus Tech Tips version of this, a bit cleaner, but also more expensive.
I know this is an old video but this is super helpful for me looking to do the same! 😀
I have a similar setup.. Considering using an EGPU or Graphics amp to achieve full desktop performance
I bought a blade 15 for just a portable gaming machine (I already have two desktops) an!d an external gaming monitor to plug it into when buddies are over or for lanning. Thats I how I use this type of setup!
I really like the idea of this thing. My current gaming station is upstairs in our study/office room, however, my wife doesn't like me sitting there to game so most of my gaming happens on my laptop.
Having a laptop and a desktop seem unnecessary so would prefer to just get a laptop that I can dock on those evenings I can play on a bigger screen.
This is convenient after I just made my own dock able battle station, still gonna watch to pick up some tips so thanks 🙂
One question I have, does that dock work if the port is not thunderbolt 3? I have an xps 15 9560 (not hardcore I know, but gets the job done nicely) which sadly doesn't include thunderbolt 3
A thin alienware laptop would be more future proof with its graph amp.
lol, "battlestation"
I literally came here to see if the Pluggable brand thunderbolt hub worked for hooking up displays on my GS65. Ugh. You bought a $300 hub to hook up a mouse and keyboard
I really liked this approach. I've gone desktop and miss the portability of my laptop
Did he use a mini display port to connect the laptop to the monitor or a mini display port to hdmi cable?
Dude shut up…I clicked, liked and subscribed just because of how beautiful that thing is!
Yo Kyle, this is eXactly what I am looking to put together… I am a real tired person who likes to travel to see my grands… All 10 of them and they are spread out literally from coast to coast so unless I have a gaming laptop to take on the road with me I am stuck being offline while i am away from my main gaming rig at home! So, tyvm for sharing this video, I will try out the docking station you have linked!
I use a lenovo thinkpad p72 in the same way. Shame there isn't a dock for it yet
Would totally run with this and maybe add the eGPU
I work security meaning i play games at work most of the day. Can't bring a desktop to work so this would be pretty ideal for me.
why displayport and not hdmi?
i thought you were going to literally mount the laptop to the monitor…. 🙁
That’s what i do as my main setup
Hey Kyle i reccomend you look into Diy perks video and gather some ideas onto making an actual latop docking station that you can slide the device in and out. The finished product looked amazing and it will take time to work on it but i recommend implementing a concept like diy perks into your setup. Maybe if you made it out of wood matching your desk would be pretty cool but keep up the good vids i love watching your videos 👌🙏
I have exact same set.up just. Different specs.
I feel like I would just prefer the extremely super compact cases
wait so i dont get it….why dont you just plug everything into the laptop. whats the point of the docking station?
Had I known this was something I could've done, I absolutely would have gone this route. Then again, I can't say I'm unhappy by any means with my desktop setup now, but I mean, still.. This is EXACTLY what I wanted to have before I gave in and just built my own desktop. Ah well. I still treat the damn thing like a laptop anyway, I constantly rip the tower and monitor out of the wall to take it to a friend's house. It's an ordeal and a half, but it does mean I have many chances to do general desk cleaning and maintenance. And moving the pc means it never gets dusty I guess. Haha.
Well! At least this video will help somebody ELSE get that docking setup they always wanted.
Good on ya, Bitwit!
Dude you just plugged your laptop into a monitor
144hz > g sync
I wish your videos ran at 21:9. That'd be sweet.
I'd definitely use this, but possibly with a few more things and different stuff:
– A seperate GPU dock with a GTX 1070 or 1080
– A laptop cooler (or two, possibly.May do one that covers the bottom and one of those ones that suck air out of the side vent)
– Probably use the water cooled Asus GX700
Is there a way to get a usb dock like this but for USB 2 ports because my msi ge72 apache laptop doesn't have thunderbolt ports or USB 3 at all
